Total broadband subscribers exceeded 78.4 million at the end of the second quarter of 2020. In Turkey, fixed broadband usage has increased considerably thanks to the leadership of Türk Telekom’s infrastructure investments since 2005, and accordingly, the number of fixed broadband subscribers increased to 15.3 million. Fiber technology (FTTH/FTTB) increased by 18.9% year on year with number of subscribers reaching 3.5 million as of second quarter of 2020. Additionally, the number of XDSL subscribers was 10.3 million and there was also 1.2 million cable subscribers at the end of Q2’20. Compared to OECD average of 31.4% fixed broadband population penetration rate, Turkey has important growth potential with its 18.4% penetration rate.
Investments for fiber optic infrastructure have increased in the country in recent years. Türk Telekom with its 314 thousand kilometer fiber network has the widest fiber infrastructure in Turkey. Alternative operators’ fiber length was 90.1 thousand kilometer at the end of Q2’20.
On the mobile broadband side, the total number of users was 63.1 million corresponding to 75.9% population penetration rate at the end of Q2’20. Mobile broadband users via mobile phones reached 62.6 million while mobile broadband users via non-phone mobile devices were 493 thousand. Compared to OECD average of 112.8% mobile broadband penetration rate, Turkey has important growth potential in terms of mobile broadband penetration.
The total number of mobile phone subscribers in Turkey was 81.7 million corresponding to 98.3% penetration rate at the end of Q2’20. Share of prepaid subscribers was 37% in Turkey in Q2’20, whereas it is around 29% in Europe.
On 26 August 2015, the Auction for IMT Services and Infrastructures Authorization was held by ICTA. Excluding VAT, total auction fee for 365.4 MHz of spectrum across 18 packages in 5 separate frequency bands (800, 900, 1800, 2100 and 2600 MHz) was EUR 3,356 mn. Following the auction, the current frequency allocated to mobile operators increased from 184 MHz to 549 MHz. Operators launched IMT services as of 1 April 2016. At the end of Q2’20, number of active LTE subscribers in Turkey reached 50.1 million.
There were 12.1 million fixed voice subscribers corresponding to 14.5% penetration rate in Turkey at the end of Q2’20. Given the average household size of 3.4 in Turkey, a significant portion of the population uses fixed voice services.
