R&D and Technology

Türk Telekom, following global technological developments and continuously increasing its allocation to R&D, conducts its activities with the "Technology for Customers" motto.

R&D Vision

To be recognized as being at the forefront of innovation through research and development of next generation technologies that enhance customer experience and contribute to the nation’s technological advancement.

R&D Mission

To develop innovative products, increase the group’s patent portfolio, anticipate, explore and adopt new technologies that impact our group’s business through a best in class in house R&D organization, and a strong external scientific and partner ecosystem.

R&D Strategic Initiatives

  • Collaborating with Universities to promote open innovation and close interaction between scientific endeavor and private enterprise
  • Working with Partners to develop prototypes that may lead to innovative products and services, as well as production and initial deployment support of suitable projects
  • Building an in house R&D Center to evaluate and adopt new technologies, and to develop patents, define the technical roadmap, and transform ideas into products and services
  • Participating in multinational EU Research activities to improve employee technical excellence through joint advanced research projects
  • Coordination of R&D activities within the group

Selected R&D Activities

Türk Telekom and Group Companies have accelerated Research and Development operations as a core requirement of their leader position in the telecommunications business. Türk Telekom has developed R&D projects in collaboration with its affiliates, business partners and other academic organizations.

Avea Avea provides data and voice services to customers coupled with various value added services (VAS) and in order to strengthen its position in the market Avea has reorganized its R&D Center in 2009. There are more than 200 high skilled engineers working in Avea R&D Center and Avea is the sole GSM operator in Turkey with a R&D certificate from Ministry of Industry and Commerce. Avea has developed the first commercial NFC based mobile payment systems with NFC technology in cooperation with Garanti Bank. Avea is now extending its capabilities in NFC technology where implementation in transportation, entertainment and shopping are to be explored. In addition, mobile health is another important domain for Avea and a telemedicine solution based on the integration of a tiny mobile microscope to the mobile phones was introduced in 2010 in cooperation with UCLA (University of California Los Angeles). Avea is running several nationally and internationally funded R&D projects and sponsoring academic research by directly funding universities. Moreover, Avea supports entrepreneurship and has recently established AveaLabs, an incubation center located at its facilities in Umraniye, Istanbul.

innovaInnova Bilisim Cozumleri (Innova IT Solutions), a TT Group Company, provides platform-independent solutions for telecommunications, finance, manufacturing, the public sector and services sector through its R&D activities. Türk Telekom performed short and long term studies on BSS/OSS infrastructures in 2009. Accordingly, improvements were made and new functionalities added in line with emergent market innovations concerning Customer Management, Receivables and Payment Monitoring Management, as well as Local Network Management, Malfunction Monitoring and channel-specific applications (Self Service, Vendor Portal, SME Portal etc.), which currently operate at Turk Telecom. With a long term perspective, organization and definition stages were completed and first release operations were commenced for Program 1, the primary purpose of which is to ensure the management of the efficient and holistic customer-oriented applications (CRM, Revenue Management and Inventory Management) of Türk Telekom and TTNET.
